Aims

Exelin was invited by the senior management team at Oxford Instruments Plasma Technology to develop a Leadership Programme for their front line supervisory team of Lead Technicians. The goal was to enhance their leadership competence and confidence to get the best out of their staff and processes.

Actions

The Leadership Programme was conducted at the company’s Yatton site near Bristol. It began with a personal assessment of the staff’s leadership behaviours and one-to-one feedback sessions to identify areas for each individual’s personal development throughout the programme.

The training modules ranged from operational improvement techniques to leadership and management tools encompassing: understanding the behaviours of others, managing change, effective feedback, team working, motivation and conflict handling.

Each delegate managed a project within their own work area to implement a tangible improvement for the business but also to create a change management scenario where they applied and practised their learning from the programme.

The Programme culminated with each delegate giving a presentation to the senior management team of Oxford Instruments on their project outcomes and their personal development journey.

Outcomes

The skills and tools learned helped the Lead Technicians to develop their leadership styles to better lead, motivate and empower their teams. The Leadership Programme we have been running with Exelin has been very well received both by our senior management team and most importantly by delegates attending the programme. In conjunction with Exelin we tailored the topics to suit the business and personal development needs of the delegates and the programme has delivered a solid foundation for business and personal development.

From the outset the senior management team at Oxford Instruments were clear that they wanted more than just straightforward training for their team of Lead Technicians and the Programme should be focused on the personal development of the individuals. The mixture of personal assessment, formal training and change implementation, combined with the enthusiasm and active participation of the delegates, made the Programme a success and helped build foundations for the next phase of their leadership journey.
